The history of the University of Michigan began with its establishment on August 26, 1817 as the Catholepistemiad or University of Michigania. The Catholepistemiad (1817–1821) Shortly after the Territory of Michigan was formed in 1805, several of its leading citizens recognized the need for a structured education.
Founded in 1817, it is the oldest institution of higher education in the state. The University of Michigan is one of the earliest American research universities and is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. In the fall of 2023, the university enrolled over 52,000 students. [4] [8]
