Ravenglass on the Lake District Coast is a pretty village with lots of leisure craft in its estuary. But its maritime legacy is not recent, as almost 2000 years ago, the Romans guarded this coast against Barbarian invasion. Their bathhouse can still be seen in the village.
At the coastal end lies Ravenglass, where three rivers – the Esk, Irt and Mite – meet to form an estuary and natural harbour. Once an important Roman port and fishing town where ships docked at the end of its main street, Ravenglass is now better known as the terminus for the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway, known fondly as La’al Ratty.
Ravenglass, the only coastal town in the Lake District, is a hidden gem among the Lake District villages. It is far from the usual tourist destinations and offers a charming, quaint atmosphere. The village features miles of sandy beaches during low tide and is a delightful escape from the busy tourist hotspots.
