Edwin Headley Holgate RCA (August 19, 1892 – May 21, 1977), was a Canadian painter, muralist, and printmaker. Holgate played a major role in Montreal's art community, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he both studied and taught.
Edwin Holgate was a Canadian modernist painter, printmaker, and educator. He was a member of the Group of Seven and the Beaver Hall Group, and taught at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal.
Edwin Holgate Holgate played a major role in Montreal’’s art community, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he both studied and taught. He was known primarily as a portraitist and for a number of female nudes in outdoor settings that he painted during the 1930s.
Among the most celebrated works by Canadian artist Edwin Holgate (1892–1977) are his prints. Although modest in number—he made just over sixty, almost all in the decade after 1922—they are brilliant examples of the early 20th-century revival of woodblock printing.
3. Sept. 2007 · Edwin Holgate, painter, engraver (b at Allandale, Ont 19 Aug 1892; d at Montréal 21 May 1977). In 1895 the Holgate family moved to Jamaica where Edwin's father was an engineer. Around 1897 Edwin returned to Toronto to study and in 1901 the Holgates settled in Montréal.
