Das Motto der Universität, das die Siegel und alle Andenken der Hochschule ziert, ist in deutscher Sprache verfasst: Die Luft der Freiheit weht. Der Satz geht auf den deutschen Humanisten Ulrich von Hutten (1488–1523) zurück und wurde von David Starr Jordan, dem ersten Präsidenten der Stanford University, eingeführt.

The Leland Stanford Junior University was founded in 1885 by Jane and Leland Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at 15. After his 1884 death, the Stanfords determined that they would use their wealth to do something for other people’s children.
Die Geschichte von Stanford. Im Oktober 1891 wurde die Stanford Universität unter dem Namen Leland Stanford Junior Universität von Leland und Jane Stanford auf ihrem Grund und Boden gegründet. Die Hochschule wurde in Erinnerung an ihren Sohn, der früh verstarb, erbaut. Bis heute trägt sie den Namen des Sohnes von Leland und Jane Stanford.
