Madeleine Cemetery [1] (in French known as Cimetière de la Madeleine) is a former cemetery in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and was one of the four cemeteries (the others being Errancis Cemetery, Picpus Cemetery and the Cemetery of Saint Margaret) used to dispose of the corpses of guillotine victims during the French Revolution.

Der Cimètiere de la Madeleine ist ein ehemaliger Friedhof im 8. Arrondissement von Paris. Ursprünglich war es einer der Friedhöfe des Pfarrbezirks der Kirche Sainte-Madeleine de la Ville-l’Évêque und wurde 1720 angelegt. Dort wurden die 130 Opfer des Feuerwerks anlässlich der Hochzeit von Ludwig XVI. mit Marie-Antoinette 1770 beerdigt.
The chapel was partly constructed on the grounds of the former Madeleine Cemetery, where King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette had been buried after they had been guillotined. King Louis XVIII shared the 3 million livres expense of building the Chapelle expiatoire with the Duchess of Angoulême.

The sculpture was designed by Albert Roze and it depicts a man breaking out of his grave and reaching skyward. Verne died March 24, 1905, and the sculpture was added to the gravesite in 1907.
