Members of Balliol have been awarded 13 Nobel Prizes with 12 Laureates (the most of any Oxford college).
Founded in 1263, Balliol is one of Oxford’s oldest colleges; the oldest academic institution in the English-speaking world still on its original site; and almost certainly the oldest co-founded by a woman anywhere.

The College was founded by John de Balliol in 1263, and was consolidated by the latter’s widow, Dervorguilla of Galloway in 1282. De Balliol was the head of a family which had been prominent land-owners in England and France for several generations.
