Ernest Orlando Lawrence was born on August 8, 1901, in Canton, South Dakota. He earned his B.A. in chemistry from the University of South Dakota in 1922, his M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1923, and his Ph.D. in physics from Yale University in 1925.
