Joséphine de Beauharnais (geborene Marie Josèphe Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie; * 23. Juni 1763 in Les Trois-Îlets auf Martinique; † 29. Mai 1814 in Rueil-Malmaison) war als Ehefrau Napoleons Kaiserin der Franzosen.
Her husband was accused of having poorly defended Mainz in July 1793, and being considered an aristocratic suspect, was sentenced to death and guillotined with his cousin Augustin on 23 July 1794, on the Place de la Révolution (today Place de la Concorde) in Paris.

Alexandre de Beauharnais stirbt im Juli 1794 unter der Guillotine. Joséphine muss damit rechnen, dass auch ihr dieses Schicksal widerfährt. Doch dann wird die Regierung Robespierres gestürzt. Joséphine kommt Anfang August 1794 wieder frei.
She retained her title of Empress and queen and left to live in Château de Malmaison, near Paris, and at her Château de Navarre in Normandy, where she passed away on the day of Pentecost in 1814, a few weeks after Napoleon’s abdication.

Despite her inability to provide Napoleon with an heir, several of her descendants through her first marriage became prominent historical figures; her most famous descendent was her grandson, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, who would one day rule over the Second French Empire as Napoleon III (r. 1852-1870).
