Uzbek language. Uzbek [c] (pronounced [ozˈbektʃæ; ozˈbek tiˈli] ), formerly known as Turki, is a Karluk Turkic language spoken by Uzbeks. It is the official and national language of Uzbekistan and formally succeeded Chagatai, an earlier Karluk language also known as "Turki", as the literary language of Uzbekistan in the 1920s. Uzbek is a Turkic language spoken by about 30 million people mainly in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. It has two main varieties: Northern Uzbek and Southern Uzbek, which differ in grammar and vocabulary. It is written with Arabic, Cyrillic or Latin scripts, and has a distinctive pronunciation with devoiced consonants and long vowels.
