History. A Brief History of Grayslake. Long before the first settlers arrived, the Potawatomi people called this area home. Following the conclusion of the Black Hawk War in 1832, the Potawatomi were removed and the territory was opened to settlement. The first pioneers to travel to the area we now call Grayslake arrived in the mid 1830s.
