It lies on the south bank of the River Thames in the historic county of Kent. Greenwich is famous for its naval and military connections and its green spaces. The present borough was established in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former metropolitan boroughs of Greenwich and Woolwich, excluding a small area north of the Thames.
