With a capacity of 33,334 it is the largest football-specific stadium and the second largest football stadium in Greece overall. The stadium hosted the 2023 UEFA Super Cup , since the original venue in Kazan had to be moved due to Russia's suspension from UEFA.
The Karaiskakis Stadium disaster was an incident that occurred on 8 February 1981 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Neo Faliro, Piraeus, Greece, after the conclusion of a football match between Olympiacos and AEK Athens. It is the worst football tragedy in Greece's history.
Karaiskaki Stadium in Neo Faliro, Piraeus is named after him as he was mortally wounded in the area. Dionysis Savvopoulos wrote both the music and lyrics to the popular Greek song "Ode to Georgios Karaiskakis" (Greek: "Ωδή στο Γεώργιο Καραϊσκάκη").
The “Georgios Karaiskakis” stadium was originally built as a velodrome in 1895 to be used during the 1896 Olympic Games. It was donated to the Olympic Games Committee by the then property owner Railway Company.
