The Vyšehrad cemetery, adjacent to the Church of Sts Peter and Paul, is one of the most significant cemeteries in Prague. Over 600 famous people are buried here – writers, scientists, poets, artists, composers, actors, doctors, politicians, and others.
The Vyšehrad cemetery is open daily and free of charge. It belongs under the Prague Cemeteries Management, a contributory organisation of the capital city of Prague. It is also a part of the Pre-booked guided tour and the guided tour Faces of Vyšehrad - National symbol (only in Czech) according to the current schedule.
It was probably built in the 10th century. Inside the fort are the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous Czechs, such as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek, and Alphonse Mucha. It also contains Prague's oldest Rotunda of St. Martin, from the 11th century.
The 19th century changed the character of Vyšehrad by adding the Slavín cemetery for the nation’s greats, and the neo-Gothic Basilica of St Peter and Paul. Its more than millennial history was topped off with a renewal of its vineyards, and extensive landscaping.
