Winfield R. Sheehan (September 24, 1883 – July 25, 1945) was a film company executive. He was responsible for much of Fox Film Corporation 's output during the 1920s and 1930s. As studio head, he won an Academy Award for Best Picture for the film Cavalcade and was nominated three more times.

Fox production head Winfield Sheehan decided to use a British director due to the film's setting, and Frank Lloyd was brought on board. Production took place from early October to November 29, 1932. The film was one of the first to use the words "damn" and "hell", as in "Hell of a lot". These had been used in the play.

The idea was actually first proposed by Fox head Winfield Sheehan after a discussion with D. W. Griffith. Sheehan set his sights on Robinson, but unsure of his ability as an actor, arranged for a contract that would be voided if Robinson failed the dramatic test.
