Until recently, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or by civilian space agencies.
As of March 2024, the corps has 48 "active" astronauts consisting of 20 women and 28 men [8] The highest number of active astronauts at one time was in 2000 when there were 149. [9] All of the current astronaut corps are from the classes of 1996 (Group 16) or later. Astronaut.
