Oriental studies is the academic field that studies Near Eastern and Far Eastern societies and cultures, languages, peoples, history and archaeology. In recent years, the subject has often been turned into the newer terms of Middle Eastern studies and Asian studies.

Within the Asian sphere, Asian studies combines aspects of sociology, history, cultural anthropology and many other disciplines to study political, cultural and economic phenomena in Asian traditional and contemporary societies. Asian studies form a field of post-graduate study in many universities.
The Faculty of Oriental Studies engages with the languages and cultures of the Middle East, South Asia, and Central and East Asia in their historical depth, from the earliest written testimonies from Mesopotamia and Egypt to contemporary Asian societies.
The Journal of Oriental Studies was founded in 1954. Starting with Volume 38, the Journal is co-published by the School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong and the Center for Chinese Language and Cultural Studies, Stanford University.
