Rattle's first marriage was to Elise Ross, an American soprano, with whom he had two sons: Sacha, who is a clarinettist, and Eliot, who is a painter. They were divorced in 1995 after 15 years of marriage. In 1996, he married his second wife, Candace Allen, a Boston-born writer.

Privates. Rattle heiratete 1980 die amerikanische Sopranistin Elise Ross, mit der er zwei Söhne hat. Nach der Scheidung im Jahr 1995 heiratete er die Schriftstellerin Candace Allen. Auch diese Ehe endete, nachdem Rattle sich 2004 mit der Mezzosopranistin Magdalena Kožená liiert hatte, die er 2008 heiratete.
