The name (Hebrew: “first to Zion”) is derived from a biblical allusion in Isaiah 41:27. Once a village, founded simply in the desert, was a suburb of Tel Aviv. Modern Rishon Lezion is the fourth largest city in the country, which more closely resembles an oasis.
