Elmo Russell " Bud " Zumwalt Jr. (November 29, 1920 – January 2, 2000) was a United States Navy officer and the youngest person to serve as Chief of Naval Operations. As an admiral and later the 19th Chief of Naval Operations, Zumwalt played a major role in United States military history, especially during the Vietnam War.
Vorgesehen waren 32 Einheiten der Klasse. Bereits hier war geplant, das Typschiff der Klasse USS Zumwalt zu nennen, nach Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg als Offizier diente und bis zum Vietnamkrieg zum Chief of Naval Operations aufgestiegen war.

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a class of three United States Navy guided-missile destroyers designed as multi-mission stealth ships with a focus on land attack. The class was designed with a primary role of naval gunfire support and secondary roles of surface warfare and anti-aircraft warfare.

It was a joint operation between United States and South Vietnamese forces which was conceived by Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., Commander, Naval Forces Vietnam (COMNAVFORV), and it was intended to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines from Cambodia in and around the Mekong Delta.
