Carlo Matteucci was born at Forlì, in the province of Romagna, to Vincenzo Matteucci, a physician, and Chiara Folfi. An indication of the esteem in which he was held was the award of the Copley Medal by the Royal Society of London in 1844. He also wrote several books; the title page of his Traité is shown on the left, together with his portrait. This book has been described as the most important work on animal electricity after Galvani.
