Michael Lynn Crews reported in "Books Are Made Out of Books" that Cormac McCarthy noted Nelson Algren's poem "Tricks Out of Times Long Gone" in the margin when writing Suttree. I haven't fact-checked that statement, but it's my summarization of your post. (I've read the Crews book, but don't recall this tidbit.)
