4. Mai 2024 · I first heard this from the singing of Dick Gaughan around 1972. The MacCrimmons were hereditary pipers to the MacLeods of Skye. The lament refers to Donald MacCrimmon who died in 1745. The MacCrimmons were reputed to be the finest of all pipers with pipers travelling from all over to study under them. (A sort of 18 th century ‘Folkworks’.)

He notes in his song archive that he changed a few lines to “to make it specific to the 1984/5 NUM Strike”. Joan & Dave Malloy sang A Miner’s Life on the 1993 miners’ benefit cassette Undefeated.

It's, also, the reason I began filling my songs with harmonica solos instead of guitar solos.
