Artist bios. Three-time Oscar winner and country musician Walter Brennan was born in Swampscott, MA, on July 25, 1894. A veteran of the First World War, Brennan began acting professionally in 1929. He received his first Oscar for his supporting role in Howard Hawks' Come and Get It, and two more followed for 1938's Kentucky and 1940s The Westerner.
"Old Rivers" was a hit song in 1962, and I remember listening to it on my transistor radio as a 12-year-old kid and getting choked up over it. Brennan also had three other top 100 songs. All of the songs have a "back home" appeal, with a strong Christian bent, and a respect for hard work, integrity and tradition.
