Juli 2015 · The performance is very Malcolm Sargent and is markedly different from more modern recordings which tend to use "period instruments" and smaller forces, however, I think Handel would have opted for the more powerful modern instruments and larger forces if they had been available to him at the time. As it was he was criticized for too large a choir and orchestra at the time.

  7. The Handel Messiah dates from 1946, and was the first of several recordings the conductor made of this choral monolith. Although it gets off to a slow, tedious start, the tempi are perfectly acceptable as the work progresses. The four soloists are fine, yet the dated mono sound can be hard-edged and unforgiving.
