Eleanor Holm. Eleanor Grace Theresa Holm (December 6, 1912 – January 31, 2004) was an American competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. An Olympian in 1928 and 1932, Holm was expelled from the 1936 Summer Olympics team by Avery Brundage under controversial circumstances.
However, Eleanor Holm maintained she did not lose control and her banning was the result of a grudge Brundage had against her. After she returned to America, she forged a successful entertainment career, appearing in four motion pictures and in musical shows that featured her swimming talent. Holm, who set six world records in the backstroke during her career, was elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1966. She became an interior decorator in Florida and married again in 1974. In 1980 she was inducted as a charter member of the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. Holm died on Jan. 31, 2004, in Miami, Fla.
