Er wurde am 3. Mai 1635 in Chambéry als dritter Sohn von Tommaso Francesco (1595–1656), prince de Carignan, und Marie de Bourbon-Condé (1606–1692), Prinzessin von Carignan und Gräfin von Soissons, geboren. Damit gehörte er zum seit etwa 1620 in Frankreich ansässigen Haus Savoyen-Carignan, einer Nebenlinie des Hauses Savoyen.
