Doby, the oft-overlooked baseball pioneer who integrated the American League with the 1947 Cleveland Indians and served his country during World War II, was posthumously honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony.
Doby passed away on June 18, 2003. Chris Blake was the 2010 publications intern in the Frank and Peggy Steele Internship Program at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Larry Doby became the second African-American manager in big league history on June 30, 1978, when White Sox owner Bill Veeck named him as the replacement for Bob Lemon.
