DEATH'S MARATHON certainly isn't a Griffith masterpiece but it's dark enough to where it really stands out among his films. Griffith was always happy to show bad people turning their lives around and doing something good but that's not exactly how this one plays out. Death's Marathon Film Analysis. Director D.W. Griffith employs a variety of innovative filmmaking techniques, under the categories of mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing, to tell his narrative in Death’s Marathon. I will focus on a few techniques that stood out to me as essential stylistic decisions that progressed the narrative.
