Beat Happening had never set out to be famous, other than during a comically ill-fated sojourn to Japan in 1984 (although all wasn’t lost: Johnson discovered Shonen Knife and brought their records with him back to the States). So long as K Records existed and Johnson was able to release music from his own band, others around town, and beyond, that was enough.
Il debutto discografico avviene nel 1985 con il self-titled Beat Happening (K-Sub Pop), prodotto da Greg Sage dei Wipers. Si tratta di un ottimo biglietto da visita, basato su un lavoro lo-fi di stampo post-rock . Nel 1988 esce Jamboree, album coprodotto da Mark Lanegan, all'epoca frontman degli Screaming Trees.
