Cass Elliot was first a member of the folky The Big 3 in 1963 and then The Mugwumps (3) along with ex-[Invalid Artist] member Denny Doherty in 1964-65. Later in 1965 she joined former The New Journeymen members John Phillips , his wife Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty (who had left the Mugwumps in 1965) and they formed The Mamas & The Papas , with her taking the nickname Mama Cass.
The Mamas & the Papas. The Mamas & the Papas was a folk-rock vocal-group which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. Formed in New York City, the group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, and Canadian Denny Doherty.
