Konstantinos Stefanopoulos ist der Sohn eines Rechtsanwalts, Abgeordneten und Ministers. Er studierte Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Athen und praktizierte von 1954 bis 1974 als Rechtsanwalt in Patras. Stefanopoulos war seit 1959 bis zu deren Tod 1988 mit Eugenia „Jenny“ Stounopoulou verheiratet. Er hatte drei Kinder und sechs Enkel.
Er trat damit die Nachfolge von Konstantinos Stefanopoulos an. Papoulias erhielt die Stimmen beider großen Parteien des Parlaments.
