Ein Sohn von Sophie Niaudet und Marcelin Berthelot kam 1904 auf grausame Weise bei einem Eisenbahnunfall ums Leben. Seitdem hatte Berthelots Frau ein schweres Herzleiden. Er hatte mehrmals beteuert, dass er seine kranke Frau Sophie Niaudet (1837–1907) nicht überleben wolle und starb nur wenige Minuten nach ihr.
