John Knox studiert an der Universität von Glasgow. Möglicherweise erhält er abschließend die Priesterweihen ; er ist jedoch als Notar und Hauslehrer tätig. 1546 bekennt er sich zur Reformation und wird Pastor in Saint-Andrews (Schottland). 1547 wird er bei der Belagerung von Saint-Andrews von französischen Truppen gefangengenommen und auf die Galeeren geschickt.
