I due si incontrarono nel 1847, quando lui aveva ventisette anni e lei quattordici. La loro relazione durò tutta la vita, nonostante la differenza sociale, l’ostilità della corte e le tante amanti del re.
Rosa Vercellana, quae Pedemontane appellatur Bela Rosin (id est pulchra Rosa), (nata die 3 Iunii 1833 Nicaeae – mortua die 26 Decembris 1885 in Pisis) fuit amans regis Sardiniae Victorii Emmanuelis II et post mortem reginae Adelhaidis de Austria anno 1855 regi Florentiae die 18 Octobris 1869 et de iure civili Romae die 7 Octobris 1877 (paulo ante mortem eius) nupsit.
Rosa Vercellana, surnommée La Bella Rosina en italien ou La Bela Rosin en piémontais, née le 11 juin 1833 à Nice (alors dans la province de Nice du royaume de Sardaigne) et morte le 26 décembre 1885 à Pise, fut la maîtresse, puis l'épouse morganatique du roi d'Italie Victor-Emmanuel II, qui lui accorda le titre de comtesse de Mirafiori et Fontanafredda.
