Mostafa A. El-Sayed, the son of a mathematics teacher, was born in Zifta, an Egyptian town in the Nile Delta. He was the youngest of seven siblings and his older brother, Mohamed, raised him after their parents died when El-Sayed was 10 years old. He attended local schools through secondary school, and then traveled to Cairo to study at Ein Shams University.

Mostafa A. El-Sayed ( Arabic: مصطفى السيد) (born 8 May 1933) is a highly cited Egyptian chemical physicist, a leading nanoscience researcher, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a US National Medal of Science laureate. He is also known for the spectroscopy rule named after him, the El-Sayed rule.

Aug. 2017 · Mostafa El-Sayed, Ph.D., an internationally recognized chemist and 2016 winner of ACS’ highest honor, the Priestley Medal, will present the Eminent Scientist Lecture as part of the Undergraduate Program at the 254 th ACS National Meeting & Exhibition (August 20–24, 2017 in Washington, DC). El-Sayed will share insights about his research groups’ promising new approach for cancer treatment.
