Leon Neil Cooper was born on February 28, 1930, in New York. He studied at Columbia Univeristy (A.B. 1951; A.M. 1953; Ph.D. 1954). From 1954 to 1955, he became a member of the Institute for Advanced Study; from 1955-1957, research associate of Illinois; from 1957-1958, an assistant professor at the Ohio State University.
