Ernst Friedrich Ferdinand Zermelo (/ z ɜːr ˈ m ɛ l oʊ /, German: [tsɛɐ̯ˈmeːlo]; 27 July 1871 – 21 May 1953) was a German logician and mathematician, whose work has major implications for the foundations of mathematics.

Geboren wird Ernst Zermelo als Sohn eines Gymnasialprofessors in Berlin.
Mit einem der Axiome, dem von ihm schon 1904 formulierten Auswahlaxiom, hat er die methodischen Möglichkeiten der Mathematik wie kein anderer nach ihm bereichert. Der vorliegende Beitrag schildert zunächst den Lebensweg und die vielseitige Forscherpersönlichkeit Zermelos.
