In its film noir favour Journey Into Fear (1943) does generate a pleasing amount of paranoia en route to its window ledge climax. Perhaps paranoia is not quite the correct description — because Joseph Cotten's character Howard Graham is well aware of the assassination plot against him — and has good reason to worry about what is round every corner, behind every door, and within every pocket.

In an Istanbul nightclub, Graham is smitten with a dancer. Meanwhile, a bullet with his name on it accidentally finds its home in the club’s magician.
By mid-Jul 1941, HR news items identified Journey into Fear as an Orson Welles project, with Welles slated to produce and direct under his Mercury Productions banner. Ellis St. Joseph and Richard Collins were to write the script for the film, which now was to star Joseph Cotten , who, according to HR , was being groomed for stardom after his appearance in Citizen Kane (see above entry).
