Ada Nettleship (born Adaline Cort Hinton; 1856 – 19 December 1932) was a British dressmaker and costume designer known for working at the forefront of the Aesthetic dress style and the rational dress movement .
Ida was the eldest daughter of celebrated animal painter John Trivett Nettleship (1841–1902). Her mother, Adaline (née Hinton 1856–1932), was a theatre dressmaker. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s (1865–1936) The Jungle Book (1894), Ida affectionately nicknamed her Slade friends after the book’s animal characters and referred to herself as ‘Mowgli’.

Such, more or less, is the story of Ida Nettleship, the first wife of Augustus John, who died of puerperal fever at the age of 30 in 1907 and was soon lost to view. In John’s unfinished mural Lyric Fantasy , painted soon after her death, Ida stands to one side of the group of women and children who make up the extended John ménage, a monumental figure in deep shadow.
