Charles Lyell. Sir Charles Lyell, 1. Baronet (* 14. November 1797 zu Kinnordy in Forfarshire; † 22. Februar 1875 in London) war einer der einflussreichsten Geologen des 19. Jahrhunderts, der dem Aktualismus zur allgemeinen Anerkennung verhalf.
Ab 1831 übernahm Charles Lyell dann den Lehrstuhl für Geologie an der Universität London. Das Aktualitätsprinzip (auch Aktualismus oder Gleichförmigkeitsprinzip genannt) geht von der zentralen Annahme aus, dass die heute gültigen Naturgesetze, auch schon in der Vergangenheit Gültigkeit besaßen.
