Joachim Peiper. The 18-year-old Berliner Joachim Peiper enlisted the SS in October 1933 and was soon assigned to the elite of this force, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. This unit amalgamated fanatic soldiers under the command of Sepp Dietrich. On July 1938, Peiper worked directly for SS-leader Heinrich Himmler and became his first adjutant.
After all Panzers were immobilized, and the last rounds had been fired, SS-Obersturmbannführer Peiper received the order to break out on the evening of the 23.12.1944. Taking along the still usable war materiel, the 800-man strong Kampfgruppe disengaged from the enemy unnoticed at 02:00 on the 24.12.1944.

Peiper was a brilliant and courageous commander. He was 12 miles away from where the americans were killed in Malmedy. The us army was putting on show trials after the war because they hated the Waffen-SS so much. The prosecuting attorney even told Peiper he believed he was innocent before the trial.
