Born in Pratt City, Alabama, Cholly began dancing in the late 1930s before his military service in 1942 during World War II. After winning a Charleston dance contest in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1923, Atkins became a singing waiter, soon teaming up with William Porter in a tap act called the Rhythm Pals.
