At nine o'clock of a gusty winter night I stood on the lower stages of one of the G. P. O. outward mail towers. My purpose was a run to Quebec in "Postal Packet 162 or such other as may be appointed"; and the Postmaster-General himself countersigned the order.
"With the Night Mail" is narrated from the viewpoint of a journalist accompanying a "postal packet" on an intercontinental mail run. I have illustrated the story with some of the news reports and advertisements Kipling fabricated for its magazine publication, and also with images of real airships that had already been flown by Kipling's time.
