Veteran guitarist Steve Khan a first-call session man during the '70s and a potent figure on the fusion scene, once again explores an Afro-Cuban vibe on BACKLOG (Tone Center). As he had done successfully on 2011's Parting Shot and 2014's Subtext , Khan puts a Latin spin on familiar tunes by Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and various composers of the Great American Songbook.
17. Mai 2017 · Latin jazz has rarely featured the guitar, but that hasn't stopped Steve Khan. Backlog continues in the vein of previous albums including Parting Shot (Tone Center, 2011) and Subtext (Tone Center, 2014): creative Latin arrangements of Great American Songbook standards and modern jazz tunes that are rarely played in Latin style (or in any style, in the case of the more obscure choices).

Juni 2014 · That said, while the then-aptly titled Parting Shot (Tone Center, 2011) suggested that guitarist Steve Khan's days recording as a leader were over, it is, indeed, great news to find, in 2014, that he's changed his mind with the release of Subtext—though the why is not necessarily so good. But more about that later.

Steve Khan's 3-chorus "Epistrophy" solo marked the 2nd in this series of transcriptions from his new album, PATCHWORK(Tone Center). Throughout the performance of this Thelonious Monk-Kenny Clarke Jazz standard, Steve projects a feeling of swing 4/4 on top of the swirling rhythms of Afro-Cuban 6/8, Abakwa, mixed together with Dennis Chambers' take on the Bernard "Purdie Shuffle."
We interpreted Monk's tune " Reflections ." We recorded this performance on September 13th, 1983 @ Mediasound. This collaboration was inspired by Donald's affection for my solo acoustic guitar album, " EVIDENCE " (1980), which had included an 18-minute "Thelonious Monk Medley."
