He turned Missing You into a duet with Alison Krauss; Bad English’s When I See You Smile became a jangling, acoustic celebration; St Patrick’s Day gave credence to the argument that Waite still had his strong-narrative, songwriting smarts.
Several albums appeared on various labels as the 21st century got under way, including Figure in a Landscape and Live & Rare Tracks from Gold Circle and One Way Records, respectively, in 2001, followed by Hard Way on No Brakes in 2004 and Downtown: Journey of a Heart on Frontiers in 2006. The former gets a part acoustic, part electric treatment here and loses none of its melancholy. The latter sees Bluegrass darling, Alison Krauss, dueting with Waite. It's a new slant on an old song. Krauss's husky intonation adds to the song's sense of intimacy. A great song is a great song, and let's face it, this one is hard to spoil.
