July 14th, 2022. 330 Montage Mtn. Rd. Moosic, PA 18507. The Académie Julian was an art school founded in 1867 by French painter and teacher Rodolphe Julian (1839-1907). It was located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, at 24 Rue du Vieux Colombier, and became one of the leading art schools in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In principle the Académie’s role was to prepare students who wished to try for entry into the state’s prestigious École des Beaux Arts, yet since women’s entry into the École des Beaux Arts was refused until 1897, one might wonder why Julian decided to offer women artists such preparatory training as early as he did.
