Overview. The English as a Second Language (ESL) department at College of San Mateo (CSM) is a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners coming from over 50 different language backgrounds. Our mission is to help multilingual learners improve their English-language skills to achieve a variety of goals.

Certificates are designed for students who wish to enhance a specific skill area or course of study. College of San Mateo offers two types of certificates: Units earned to meet certificate requirements may be applied toward the 60 units required for an AA or AS degree. In some cases certain certificates can be stacked into an Associates Degree.
