À l'origine, dans les années 1950, Charlie Rich était pianiste de jazz et jouait dans le groupe des Velvetones (en).En 1958, Sam Phillips lui fait enregistrer un premier disque sur le label Phillips International, annexe de Sun Records qui contiendra Whirwind et Philadelphia baby, deux chansons de rock ayant des allures de gospel et possédant un son original pour l'époque.
30. Jan. 2014 · Those are the sixties sessions produced by Jerry Kennedy, for my money the best music Charlie Rich ever recorded. I love Pictures and Paintings, it's not what you expect from him, but supposedly it's an album he had always wanted to make, and it succeeds beautifully. The most talented artist to come out of the Sun era, in my opinion.
