Haley continued to make films through the World War II years, with his last major film in 1946. During the 1950s, he pursued several guest and cameo roles in television, in such shows as "Desilu Playhouse," "Playhouse 90," "Make Room for Daddy," the "Jackie Gleason Show," and "Marcus Welby, MD." His son, Jack Haley Jr., persuaded him to come out of retirement for a one-shot return to features with a cameo in 1970's "Norwood." Although there were occasional TV roles (e.g., the ABC movie "Rolling Man"), the elderly Haley seemed uninterested in pursuing a career as a character actor, preferring to be remembered for his earlier work.

After being part of The Wizard of Oz cast made him a recognizable star, Haley played such film roles as Albert L. Tuttle in One Body Too Many, Steve Kimball in Sing Your Way Home, and Jack Carroll in Vacation in Reno throughout the 1940s.

Even that wasn't perfect; Haley developed an eye infection from the gunk, which caused him to miss four days of shooting. But he didn't lose his eye as a result.
