Neville was raised in Detroit. After high school, he helped support the family while employed as a soda jerk, waiter, and shoe salesman in Kewanee.

16. Apr. 1992 · Biography. Highly decorated WWII soldier who carved a niche as a tough-guy character actor, beginning with a role as a hood in the film noir, "D.O.A." (1950). Brand's rough-hewn features helped him project an air of menace in hard-boiled dramas, war films and westerns, most notably as the convict representative in "Riot in Cell Block 11" (1954).
NEVILLE BRAND came to acting as a war hero. He enlisted at 16 and emerged the 4th most decorated GI in WWII. He acted in training films in the Army & used the GI Bill to study drama. With his gravelly voice and coarse facial features, he was a natural heavy, playing Al Capone in two movies and the series “The Untouchables”.
